SAD, BJP have contrary views on drug menace

As campaigning picks up speed in Punjab for the February 4 Assembly election, alliance partners Akali Dal and the BJP appear to have different views on the issue of drug menace in Punjab.

While the Akali Dal has maintained that the drug stain on Punjab is a ploy by the Congress and other parties to defame the youth of Punjab, its ally BJP, in the manifesto for the elections, speaks about its resolve to stem out the drug menace.

The BJP document promises to set up a special anti-drugs squad to root out  the menace and the party leadership has spoken for the need for a “drug-free Punjab”.

The party has also promised to open rehabilitation centres at the district level and a provide free medicines, among other things.

The BJP’s attempt to talk about the issue of drugs is being viewed as an attempt by the party to distance itself from the blemish its ally has got from reportedly patronising the menace. The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have openly accused Akali leaders of involving with the drug mafia.

During a press conference in Chandigarh a few days ago, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal promised that minister Bikram Singh Majithia will be in jail by April 15.
