Govt to withdraw notification on Jallikattu

Last Updated 24 January 2017, 19:26 IST

The Centre on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it has decided to withdraw its January 2016 notification that had allowed the use of bulls as performing animals in Tamil Nadu’s Jallikattu, Karnataka’s Kambala and bullock cart races at other places.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi submitted before a bench presided over by Justice Dipak Misra that the Centre would withdraw its January 7, 2016, notification and file an application in this regard.

The move by the Centre comes in the wake of the Tamil Nadu Assembly passing a fresh legislation to allow the sport in the state.

If the court allows the Centre’s plea, the very basis of the petitions filed by a host of NGOs and statutory body, the Animal Welfare Board of India, would be gone.
