The Income Tax (IT) department has issued a notice to Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) seeking details of customers who have paid more than Rs 10,000 as advance bill payment in old currency notes, between November 9 and December 31, 2016.

The government, after scrapping currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination, had allowed people to pay Cesc bills in advance with the banned notes, till December 31.

Now, those who had made payment of more than Rs 10,000 are under the scanner.
The Income Tax department has also been gathering information about people who deposited more than Rs 2.5 lakh in their bank accounts and those who made bulk purchase of gold post-demonetisation. The I-T department has taken up this exercise, after doubts were raised that the customers with black money had settled the pending bills of others using old notes.

It is said that those who could not deposit the black money in their bank accounts had chosen the safe way and used the notes to pay the bills in advance, as permitted by the Energy department.  The Cesc authorities have been directed to give details such as the RR number, name of the customer, address, phone number, PAN, amount paid, receipt number and date of payment.

Cesc Superintending Engineer Shivaprasad told DH that details of  customers who had paid Rs 10,000 and more during the said period have been furnished to the I-T department.

The department may issue notices to such customers seeking details, it is said.
