'I always wanted to be an actor'

Last Updated 29 January 2017, 19:35 IST

Actor Naveen Thirthahalli was passionate about making his mark in the film industry. After finishing college, he joined for rigorous training and acting classes, before movies like ‘Dushta’ and ‘One Time’ and short films came his way.

The actor will now be seen in Yandamoori Veerendranath’s ‘KarigambaLiyalli MiDinaaga’ in the lead role . In a tete-a-tete with Tini Sara Anien, the actor talks about the new project and his journey so far.

How was your entry into the film industry?
I always wanted to be an actor. From practising karate to training for film stunts, I have been preparing for a while now. I even did intense training at the gym for eight years. I was part of a few television serials and finally lead roles in ‘Kaurya’ and ‘Andhagaara’ came my way. The shoot for these movies is going on. But, ‘KarigambaLiyalli MiDinaaga’, which also happened around the same time, will be the much-awaited break in my
career.

Can you tell us a bit about ‘KarigambaLiyalli...’?
The movie is a suspense thriller and will be directed by novelist Yandamoori Veerendranath. The movie, which will be produced by Vishwajith Productions,  is about the bond between a Muslim father and his Hindu daughter. The story in based on terrorism in the country and the efforts to curtail these activities.
Your role in the movie..

I play the role of a tough officer with the Anti Terrorist Squad. My character will also be seen delivering comic lines and romancing the heroine, which will help showcase the varied shades I am capable of bringing out. I was convinced that I would be able to explore the actor in me with this project, so I agreed instantly.

Yandamoori sir was convinced that I would be able to pull off action sequences and charming hero scenes with the same passion. This is why he wanted to take me for the role. He even added a scene in the movie where I will be shown exercising, where my body is shown off in a very artistic way.

What were the challenges you faced?
Honestly speaking, it was a smooth process. Despite being a senior person, Yandamoori sir was grounded. In fact, he was clear about what he wanted and he would go out of his way to make sure that I understood the scene. He would even act the scene out sometimes, which made it more relaxing for me. It wasn’t tough at all. The action sequences were a bit challenging though.

How was this project different from others?
I have mostly been a part of projects by new directors and this was the first time I was working with a seasoned artiste. Thus the need to do justice to the role was important. Also, the story is very different compared to most
stories. The movie is also shorter and is fast-moving.

An interesting fact about the project...
Unlike most projects, this movie was shot in a very short time — in 25 days. Also, it has been shot entirely in Bengaluru — in and around Marathahalli.

Are you excited or nervous?
I am very excited as this movie will pave the path ahead for me. I am interested in being known as an action hero and I am hopeful that the project will help me with my dream.

If you hadn’t been an actor, what would you have been?
(Thinks) I would have probably been a CA. But, I always wanted to be an actor and can’t imagine myself elsewhere.
