Former Union minister E Ahamed passes away
Former Union minister and Lok Sabha member E Ahamed passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, a day after he suffered a cardiac arrest in Parliament. Ahamed’s death was announced after a tussle at RML Hospital at midnight, where Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other senior leaders protested the lack of information available about the leader’s health, particularly to his family members.

Doctors at the hospital announced that Ahamed passed away at 2.15 am. The Congress demanded that the presentation of the Budget be postponed as a mark of respect to the departed leader. However, the government went ahead with the presentation as planned.

In the Lok Sabha, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge wanted the proceedings to be adjourned in view of Ahamed’s demise, and claimed the government wanted to maintain secrecy about his health since Tuesday. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan told the Lok Sabha that President Pranab Mukherjee had consented to the presentation of the Budget on Wednesday. She said that the House would be adjourned on Thursday as a mark of respect to Ahamed.

The Intelligence Bureau informed the government that it would not be possible to maintain secrecy regarding the Budget in case of postponement as copies of the document had already been despatched to various centres.
