Fine win for Warriors

Defending champions Jaypee Punjab Warriors put up a fine show to defeat Delhi Waveriders 3-2 in the Hockey India League at Shivaji Stadium on Tuesday.

The win helped Warriors to jump to fourth place while, Waveriders, with their third defeat from four matches, continue to be at the bottom with no wins.

The two teams played to their strength at the start. Waveriders held firm with their organised defence against the free flowing attack of Punjab. Though not for long. In the dying minutes of first quarter, Warriors’ Satbir Singh’s pin-point cross was swiftly pounced on by Robert Van der Horst (15th minute), who slammed in from the top of the circle with a reverse hit.

It swung the Waveriders into action. Led by Mandeep Singh and Simon Child, they launched a series of raids into the Warrior's circle. What followed then was a fast-paced and attacking quarter. It resulted in two penalty corners for the Waveriders, but captain Rupinderpal Singh couldn’t convert any.

The Waveriders, however, mounted the pressure in the third quarter and finally got the equaliser through Tristan White (39th minute), who maintained his composure during a goal-mouth skirmish and neatly pushed the ball past goalkeeper Clemons. In a tight final quarter,  Mink Van Der Weerden got the Warriors back into the lead in the 53rd minute through a penalty corner.
