A two-month ‘Grape and Watermelon Mela 2017’ at Hopcoms outlets will begin from Tuesday.

Over 15-20 different varieties of grapes like Thomson seedless, Flame seedless, Krishna Sharad, Indian Black Globe, Red Globe, Bangalore Blue, Dilkush and others along with four varieties of watermelon – Namdhari, Kiran, Sun Melon and Honey Due Melon – will be on sale.

The produce will be sold at 10% discount at 250 Hopcoms retail outlets across the city. Besides these outlets, 12 vans will sell fruits at different parts of Bengaluru.

The mela will be officially inaugurated by S S Mallikarjun, Minister for Horticulture.

Hopcoms president G R Srinivasan at a press conference on Monday said fruit melas are being held to encourage farmers, provide them a better market and to ensure consumers also benefit from reasonable prices.

The organisation also intends to sell raisins, cashew nuts, pista and almonds besides a variety of oranges and pomelos during the mela.

“Grapes are purchased directly from farmers from Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Koppal, Gadag and Belagavi. We have a sales target of over 600 tonnes of grapes and between 500 and 600 tonnes of watermelons during the mela,” Hopcoms president said.

“During the last mela, 550 tonnes of grapes were sold. At present, 12 tonnes of watermelons are sold everyday at Hopcoms outlets and the demand for melons has increased with increase in temperature,” he added.
