Dinakaran back in party, to hold charge

Last Updated 15 February 2017, 20:25 IST

In a bid to maintain her grip on the party, AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala on Wednesday reinducted her nephew and former MP T T V Dinakaran and appointed him deputy general secretary, a newly created post.

Now Dinakaran will hold the second highest position in the party after Sasikala, who is lodged in Bengaluru jail after being convicted by the Supreme Court in a disproportionate assets case.

AIADMK sources said Dinakaran has been entrusted with the power to look after entire party affairs in the absence of Sasikala.

Ahead of her surrender at Bengaluru court on Wednesday, she also reinducted another nephew, S Venkatesh, into the party. However, he has not been given any plum post.

In December 2011, the then chief minister J Jayalalithaa expelled Sasikala and 13 others, including her husband Natrajan and Dinakaran, following reports that they were planning to capture the party in the event of her conviction in the wealth case.

However, Jayalalithaa reinducted Sasikala into the party after she gave an apology letter, saying she would neither seek any party post nor contest elections.

But Natrajan, Dinakaran and other expelled members were not brought back. Dinakaran was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999 and was a member of the Rajya Sabha between 2004 and 2010.

He is the brother of Sudhakaran, Jayalalithaa’s disowned foster son.
