The Medical Education Department has issued an order for immediate relocation of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) to Ramanagaram district.

As the construction of the administrative wing of the proposed building at Archakarahalli in Ramanagaram is yet to be completed, the university would function from the Kandaya Bhavana building in Ramanagaram.

The university administration and the state government have been at loggerheads for over three months now regarding the relocation as it would cause inconvenience to students.

The university had also written to the state government seeking relocation only after the construction of the proposed premises is complete as it would disrupt the examination process otherwise.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting between Minister for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil and Ramanagaram district-in-charge minister D K Shivakumar. The cost for the relocation would be met from the university’s funds.

The other facilities necessary for the functioning of RGUHS would be provided by the district administration. The government has identified a 214-acre plot in Archakarahalli for the construction of the university. An amount of Rs 580 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of the building.

Property dispute

At least 77 acres of the land allotted by the state government is under dispute and the land holders have gone to court. It was decided at the meeting that advocates be appointed to have the case proceedings expedited.
