Woman creates a scene at top cop's office

A 34-year-old woman created a scene at the police commissioner’s office on Tuesday by screaming aloud that she and her two daughters had consumed poison.

The woman said she took the extreme step as police “failed” to book her estranged third husband for sexually assaulting his two stepdaughters.

Senior police officers panicked and sent the woman and her daughters — aged 14 and 12 — to Bowring Hospital. They are out of danger. It is not clear where they consumed poison, a senior police officer said.

The woman had filed a complaint against her third husband, Murali Kumar, and his family at Mahadevapura police station on Monday. But she was not happy with the sections invoked by police.

On Tuesday, she arrived at the commissioner’s office and demanded that her husband be booked for sexually assaulting her two daughters. Following her suicide attempt, police booked him under the Pocso Act.

The Mahadevapura police maintained they had registered a complaint as per her allegations and a counter-complaint by her husband. She was booked under IPC Sections 383 (extortion), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

She is accused of blackmailing Kumar into living with her or paying her huge maintenance, said an officer at Mahadevapura police station. A police source said she had separated from her two husbands. She met Kumar in 2013 and went on to marry him.

The couple lived in KR Puram for a year. Back then, she had left her three daughters in the care of her relatives. But when Kumar also deserted her, she started living with her daughters and threatened him with criminal prosecution. On Monday night, she caused a ruckus at a provision shop run by Kumar’s father in Kaveri Nagar, which resulted in a counter-complaint against her.
