You can grow a pumpkin in your backyard

Now, pumpkin could be grown in a small flower planter in your own backyard.

A new imported variety of pumpkin introduced by the Indian Institute of Horticulture Research (IIHR) would make it possible.

Pattypan squash or bush squash as it is popularly known as is grown in the IIHR Farms.

According to researchers, this is also being introduced in the seeds kit which is given to farmers. It resembles a flat white pumpkin and it can be grown across the state.

With a taste similar to that of bottle gourd, it has not gained much popularity due to lack of awareness, Senthil Kumar, scientist, IIHR, said.

Sweet variety

“It is a mildly sweet variety and can be used for cooking just like bottle gourd,” he explained.

While the usual pumpkin varieties grow as creepers, this variety takes minimal space and could also be grown in a pot in the backyard. “It has reached at least 50,000 farmers so far. We are yet to see the response,” he said.
