UP jails havens for criminals: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday attacked the ruling SP government for its reported failure on the law and order front, and said the jails in Uttar Pradesh were ‘havens’ for criminals.

“In UP, criminals are seen smiling while going to jail. For them, jails are like palaces from where he can continue to run his gang under legal protection,” he said at an election rally in Mau.

Modi said he wanted to convey the message to all such criminals that the law would deal sternly with them once a BJP government was installed in the state after the polls.

The prime minister also contested the claim of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav that the state was getting 24-hour power supply and said that the claim was true only in the districts where polling was yet to take place. “The districts where polling had already taken place are facing power cuts. It is similar to cheating the people of the state,” he added.
The prime minister, whose party had entered into an electoral alliance with several smaller caste-based outfits in the eastern UP region, assured his alliance partners that they would be accommodated in the ministry even if the BJP was able to get a majority on its own. “We are not like those who leave their partners in the lurch. We form life-long alliances,” Modi said.
