58% turnout in phase 5 of UP elections

An estimated 58% voters exercised their franchise in 51 seats across 11 districts in Uttar Pradesh, in the fifth phase of the state Assembly elections on Monday.

According to official sources, Ambedkar Nagar district recorded around 65% turnout, while Siddharth Nagar district recorded about 54% turnout. In Amethi, the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, an estimated 57% electorate exercised their franchise.

Sources said barring a few incidents of technical problems with electronic voting machines, the polling was by and large peaceful.

The districts where polling was held included Amethi, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Siddharth Nagar, Faizabad, Balrampur, Gonda, Bahariach, Shravasti, Basti and Sultanpur.

Prominent contestants included rape-accused UP minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati and Amita Singh, Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh’s second wife.
