Three detained over boy's murder; fight over girl may be motive

The police have detained three boys in connection with the murder of Harsharaj (16), a student of the Government High School, Yelahanka, on Monday afternoon.

“The police need to clarify whether the three boys are minors. We have written to the school seeking information on the boys’ dates of birth according to official records. The motive and names of the suspects can’t be revealed if they are minors,” DCP (Northeast) Dr P S Harsha told DH.

Harsharaj was walking home with a prize and a garland when he was stabbed to death near the railway track in Gandhinagar, just 200 metres from the school, at 3 pm.

It is said that a fight over a girl resulted in the murder. One of the suspects, who is doing his I PUC, was attracted to Harsharaj’s class-mate. However, the girl would often go around with Harsharaj, which angered the suspect. He had asked Harsharaj to stay away from the girl, but Harsharaj had ignored his warning, said sources.

Harsharaj was sitting next to the girl during the school annual day on Monday, which made the suspect lose his cool. He contacted two other boys and asked them to join him.

The suspects accosted him near the railway track when he was returning home and stabbed him to death. The body was handed over to the parents on Tuesday after the post-mortem.
