An emergency City Municipal Council (CMC) meeting convened to oppose supply of 400 cusecs water from Yagachi reservoir to Hassan resolved to lay siege on Yagachi reservoir in Belur on March 2.

The meeting was chaired by City Municipal Council president Kavitha Shekar. In a meeting chaired by Mysore Division Regional Commissioner M V Jayanthi recently, it was decided to supply 400 cusecs water from the reservior to Hassan.

Accordingly, 20 cusecs water is being daily released since February 27, said Water Supply Board assistant executive engineer Maruthi. About 22.7 MLD water from Yagachi Reservoir is being supplied to Chikkamagaluru town daily. In addition, 4.5 MLD water is being supplied to Hirekolale Lake.

The water level in Yagachi Reservoir is below the dead storage level. Even after supplying 400 cusecs water to Hassa, the available water would be sufficient to supply to 17 villages of Chikkamagaluru, Belur and Arasikere taluks till August, said Yagachi Reservoir engineer. The residents in Belur have already staged a protest against supply of water to Hassan and have warned to stall the supply of water to Chikkamagaluru town.

The district administration should bring the issue to the notice of the state government. Demanding to ensure that the supply of water to Hassan will not cause inconvenience to the drinking water supply in Chikkamagaluru, it was decided to lay siege to the reservoir.

Announcing the resolution, Kavitha Shekar said that CMC members, along with members of pro-Kannada organisations, will lay siege to the reservoir at 11 am. CMC member Hiremagaluru Putaswamy said, “The water is required for the entire twon. Let us not politicise the issue of water and fight unitedly for the cause of water.” Member H D Thammaiah urged to stop supply of water to Hassan.
