Last Updated 01 March 2017, 20:05 IST

The state Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to increase the amount of tuition fee reimbursed to private school managements under the Right to Education Act.

Reimbursement for primary classes has been increased to Rs 16,000 from Rs 11,000 per child per year. For nursery classes, the refund would go up to Rs 8,000 from Rs 5,924 per child per year. The enhanced refund would be applicable from the academic year 2017-18, Law Minister T B Jayachandra told reporters here.

He said the Cabinet discussed at length the implications of RTE Act on government schools. Many ministers objected to the enhancement of reimbursement and wanted the government to protect government schools as well. Some members of the Cabinet suggested introduction of teaching  English language, he added.

Jayachandra said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanvir Sait to submit a report.
