5,000 runners register for Manipal Marathon

About 5,000 runners have registered under the four categories of Manipal Marathon to be flagged off from KMC Greens at 6.30 am on Sunday, by Manipal Education and Medical Group CEO and MD Dr Ranjan Pai.

According to a press release, about 800 runners will take part in the 21.1-kilometre half marathon and the 10-kilometre race. The remaining have registered for the five-kilometre and three-kilometre runs.

The first edition of the half marathon has attracted runners from other states as well and Manipal will witness the biggest marathon to be held in this region. Minister for Sports, Youth Empowerment and Fisheries Pramod Madhwaraj will be the chief guest at the prize distribution to be held at the Greens at 9 am.

Prominent persons of the district will be present for the marathon which is being organised by the Manipal Runners’ Club and the Protons Running of Bangalore, under the aegis of Manipal University and assisted by the Udupi District Athletic Association. The event is co-sponsored by Manipal University, Adani and Syndicate Bank.

Manipal Marathon carries a cash prize of Rs 5.5 lakh and the amount will be the same for men and women. The winners in the half marathon will be richer by Rs 70,000 each, the runners-up will get Rs 35,000 each and those finishing third will get Rs 20,000 each. Fourth to 10th place finishers will also be given cash prizes. The prize money for the 10-kilometre race is Rs 10,000; Rs 7,500 and Rs 5,000 respectively for the first three places in both sections.

The race will all start and end at KMC greens. A Carnival De Manipal will also be held during the event. Volunteer Services Organization (VSO) of Manipal University will present it. There will be yoga, sumba, DJ, dance floor and other fun activities to raise and spread awareness regarding acquired and life-style diseases.
