Wild jumbos feeling the heat of drought

Last Updated 03 March 2017, 18:12 IST

With the district reeling under severe drought due to deficient rainfall, the water woes in the forest areas has worsened. This is forcing the wild animals to stray into the human habitats. The wild jumbos straying into the towns and villages in the district in search of food and water has become the order of the day.

A few waterbodies in the forest areas have gone bone dry while a few others are fast drying up. The wild elephants are finding it tough to beat the heat. The elephants normally splash water on their bodies to stay cool during summers. With the streams and ponds having gone dry, the jumbos are left with no option but to intrude human settlements for food and water. A herd of elepghants from Dubare reserve forest was spotted near Cauvery river at Siddapura since Wednesday.

There is acute shortage of drinking water in villages. The waterbodies in Maldare, Dubare forest, Ammale, Bachikere, Aanesatha Hadlu have already dried up. During March-April, the planters need large quantities of water to water the coffee plants for better yield. With the waterbodies fast depletingp, the planters too are in distress.
