A 22-year-old Muslim girl was attacked on social media for singing a Hindu hymn on a Kannada reality show.

Suhana Syed appeared on Zee Kannada and sang a song in praise of Lord Srinivasa.
The judges appreciated her singing and praised her for bridging religious chasm, but it was a different story online. A post on the Facebook page Mangalore Muslims said Suhana had brought disrepute to other Muslim women by singing in front of men.

The post, in Kannada, said Suhana had achieved nothing great, while young children who recited the Quran had achieved a lot. It also criticised her parents, saying they wouldn’t go to heaven.

However, the video of Suhana’s song attracted positive comments from many. Some trolled her, saying she had chosen the song only to win sympathy from the judges.

Suhana’s father Syed Munir, a government school teacher, said people with vested interests were creating a controversy.  Munir said, “No organisation has criticised her participation in the show. And the family has received no threats.” Munir told DH Suhana would continue in the reality show.
