Rains expose BBMP's poor preparedness

Tuesday’s evening showers exposed the poor preparedness of the civic agencies for the monsoon, which is three months away.

The 36-mm rainfall brought the city to its knees with water gushing into many houses. Major roads were waterlogged bringing traffic to a grinding halt. Tree branches came down crashing at 19 places and there were incessant calls to the BBMP control room whole night. There was no let up in the situation till Wednesday noon in many areas.

Vehicles piled up for almost a kilometre at Doddanekkundi railway underpass due to waterlogging. A truck, which was stranded due to a mishap at Marathahalli added to the woes. The situation remained the same for around three hours on Wednesday morning till the personnel from Fire and Emergency services and traffic police pumped out the water.

Clement C Jayakumar, a member of Whitefield Rising, said they had faced a similar problem last year also. “The BBMP and the BDA had promised to address the issue, but have done nothing till now,” he said. Many people who were heading to offices returned home as they were not able to continue their journey due to the traffic jam.
According to the BBMP sources, there was heavy traffic congestion around Majestic as railway underbridge near Kino Theatre had waist-deep water. A similar situation was witnessed on Sankey Road where water stagnated at an underpass near the Le Meridien Hotel.

There were complaints about water gushing into the houses at BTM Layout Second Stage, Srinagar, Devarajeevanahalli, Konena Agrahara and Magadi Road.
Bescom authorities said that they received 3,856 complaints on Tuesday night of which 3,600 had been resolved. The India Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall coupled with thunder showers for the next two days in the city due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over Lakshwadeep and its neighbourhood.
