Indiranagar residents protest zoning violations

Last Updated 11 March 2017, 19:21 IST

Continuing their #FightforIndiranagar, residents of the area occupied the footpath from the KFC signal on 100 Feet Road up to 6th Main Road in their peaceful protest against the illegal commercialisation of their neighbourhood.

Hundreds of residents of all ages took part in the protest held late in the evening, holding placards and forming a human chain.

The protest was organised by several residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) such as HAL 2nd Stage Civic Amenities and Cultural Association, Indiranagar 1st Stage League, 2nd Stage League, Defence Colony, HAL 2nd Stage and 3rd Stage RWA.

The residents said that they are fed up of the illegal businesses operating in the area. The large number of pubs and restaurants have become a nuisance due to noise pollution, improper garbage disposal and loud music disturbing the peace in the residential area.

Smita S, an economist and a resident of the area, said, “It is a complete failure of urban governance and economic governance. Businesses here are violating several norms and despite repeated appeals to BBMP, BDA and other agencies, there has been no change. We want a response from both state and city authorities.”

The residents had protested on 12th Main Road last Saturday and they intend to continue their protest until authorities address their issues.
