Bleak chances of revival for Cong in UP

Last Updated 12 March 2017, 19:29 IST

Nurturing dreams of making a comeback in Uttar Pradesh, in alliance with the Samajwadi Party, after being out of power for 27 years, the Congress recorded its worst-ever performance in the state in the just-concluded Assembly elections.

Not only did the party’s tally decline to a single digit, its vote share also took a hit and dropped to a single digit, making its revival in India’s biggest state extremely difficult, if not impossible.

The Congress, which had contested 105 seats in the Assembly elections, only managed to win seven seats in the most politically crucial state.

It also suffered severe jolts in its bastions of Raebareli and Amethi.
