President Alka Shah said that it was a rare occasion and a privilege for her to be the president of the club when it is in its 60th year. “It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I have grown both emotionally and socially ever since I took leadership of the golden jubilee committee. ‘Plan for your work and work for your plan’ — this is what the club stands for,” she said.

She highlighted that various initiatives have already been undertaken for 2016-17 including ‘anna dana’, contributions to Akshaya Patra, cleft lip correction and blood donation drives. She added that the club is also actively working in the area of youth empowerment.

Sanjay Udani, chairman of the diamond jubilee organising committee, expressed, “Ours is the first Lions Club in South India that’s celebrating its diamond jubilee. I started as a young Leo 32 years back when I was in college. During our earlier days, the service activities were very simple. Now they have assumed a larger form, where you really need to do something big and substantial to bring about change, something that uplifts the entire community.”

Chief guest V V Krishna Reddy mentioned in his speech that the focus of the Lions has shifted from ‘sight first’ to elimination of the deadly disease ‘diabetes’ which is the root cause of many other ailments.

Captain Siva Subramanyam, secretary of the diamond jubilee organising committee, was grateful for the members’ support.

“The journey of 60 years of our Lions Club has been made possible only because our members truly believe in selfless service and its ensuing joy as also the immense fellowship that we enjoy which is central to our togetherness in all these years.

Education merits first place in our service as we believe that an educated child will better his/ her life as also the quality of the society,” he said. The event came to a close with the singing of the National Anthem followed by fellowship and dinner.
