Markets turn green again

Markets continued their upward journey after taking a break on Wednesday, with the Nifty hitting new closing highs on Thursday.

While the Nifty 50 closed above the 9,100-mark for the first time in its history, up 68.90 points (0.76%) at 9153.70, the S&P BSE Sensex closed up 187.74 points (0.64%) at 29,585.85.

Advances outnumbered declines nearly 3:1 on the NSE with 1,153 securities out of a total of 1,741 advancing, 490 declining and 98 remaining unchanged.

Adani Ports was the top gainer on the NSE, ending up 4.82% at Rs 325.25 with volumes of over 70.51 lakh shares. Some of the other gainers included Tata Steel (up 4.52% to Rs 500.70), Hindalco (up 4.4% to Rs 199.25), Bajaj Auto (up 2.33% to Rs 2940) and Indusind Bank (up 2.27% to Rs 1379).

It was found that 83 securities hit new 52-week highs, while 25 securities hit new 52-week lows on the NSE.

 Just 10% of the Nifty 50 scrips (five out of 50) managed to end in the red zone. Bharti Airtel was the top loser, ending down 0.72% at Rs 360.60. The other losers included RIL, Idea, ICICI Bank and YES Bank.
