Design logo and model for Namma Canteens, earn a cash prize

Last Updated 20 March 2017, 20:30 IST

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which is launching the Namma Canteens, has decided to invite architects to design the best pre-cast models of canteens.

The government-run subsidised hotels offering breakfast at Rs 5 and meals at Rs 10 would come up in 198 BBMP wards. The best design will win a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh. Another award in the series, carrying a purse of Rs 1 lakh, pertains to the logo for the flagship programme.

“We will place an advertisement shortly in these two categories. We will invite architects and logo designers to plan for the Namma Canteen,” said BBMP commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad.

Canteen with Wi-Fi
The Namma Canteen will be unique unlike the Amma Canteen in Tamil Nadu, Dal-Bhath Centre in Chhattisgarh and Aam Aadmi Canteen in Delhi, all of them offering food at Rs 5 per person.  Namma Canteen will be in sync with Bengaluru’s status of IT capital of India. It will have Wi-Fi connectivity and CCTV cameras. These canteens will be on par with any Darshini restaurant. “I have already instructed joint commissioners of all the eight zones of BBMP to identify locations in all the 198 wards. We will set up these canteens at places where we have a floating population,” said Prasad.

These canteens could be either on BBMP land, BDA, BWSSB or even the Revenue Department’s property. As the canteens may attract a large number of people, the minimum space required will be 500 sq ft.

Meeting on Tuesday
To chalk out modalities for Namma Canteens, Food and Civil Supplies Minister U T Khader will hold a meeting with BBMP officials where representatives of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) will also participate. Iskcon may be entrusted with the project.
