Just begun, Capt has Sidhu's issues to deal with

Within days of being sworn in as chief minister, Capt Amarinder Singh already has a handful of issues to deal with when it comes to his debutant Cabinet colleague Navjot Sidhu.

If it was Sidhu’s decision to continue his appearance in popular television show ‘Comedy nights with Kapil’ that raked up a controversy over ‘conflict of interest’, the former cricketer is also not content with the portfolios assigned to him, said sources. He is now seeking an additional cabinet portfolio from the chief minister.

Among other portfolios, Sidhu was sworn in as local bodies minister. But he wants to take charge of housing and urban development as well, a portfolio currently with the chief minister. In the first Cabinet meeting chaired by Capt a few days ago, Sidhu ‘put his foot down’ to a proposal which eventually led to the agenda being grounded, it is learnt.

Capt’s another Cabinet colleague and Punjab’s richest MLA Rana Gurjit Singh too has sparked off a controversy of sorts by ‘contradicting’ the chief minister on the decision to do away with red beacons atop official vehicles. Gurjit maintains that a minister will be recognised only if he is allowed a red beacon. But Gurjit says he’ll abide by what the chief minister asks him to do. Capt, along with his Cabinet colleagues, has given up the use of red beacons as a measure to curb the legacy of VIP culture.

Capt Amarinder will now be seeking legal opinion from Punjab Advocate General Atul Nanda to know if there is a conflict of interest in case Sidhu continues his appearance on television. Opposition leaders have been critical of Sidhu on the issue.

Sources said, Sidhu will soon be discussing the issue of an additional Cabinet berth for him with Capt. Sidhu feels the two departments can work and deliver more efficiently if they are integrated. In the likelihood of incorporating the two ministries together. Denials apart, Sidhu was dejected after missing out on the post of deputy chief minister.
