'Negligence by govt bodies killing lakes'

Last Updated 21 March 2017, 20:57 IST

Taking strong exception to the poor status of lakes in Bengaluru, the People’s Campaign for Right to Water (PCRW) accused the government agencies of failing in their responsibility.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Kshitij Urs of PCRW said, “It is unfortunate that instead of celebrating good work on World Water Day, we are highlighting the 60 orphaned lakes of the city — two of them are Bellandur and Varthur.”

He charged BDA with destroying the lakes by creating residential areas on lake beds and allowing their encroachment.

“In September 2016, BDA transferred the responsibility of 60 lakes to the BBMP arbitrarily. The BBMP too refused to take over these lakes citing lack of resources,” said Urs.
