Mallya issue comes up in Rajya Sabha again

Last Updated 22 March 2017, 19:20 IST

There was yet another mention of Vijay Mallya in the Rajya Sabha, with JD (U) MP Harivansh demanding a probe into whether the liquor baron’s sky mansion in Bengaluru was funded through shell companies.

The lawmaker raised the issue during the Zero Hour, saying shell companies have become vehicles to carry out illegal activities, including money laundering and converting black money into white.

Citing reports, he said the Income Tax (I-T) Department had acted against shell companies recently. He also referred to the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which pulled up the I-T Department for “selective action” against shell companies.

He said that against 15 lakh companies registered in the country, only 6 lakh pay income tax.
Referring to Mallya’s mansion-style penthouse in Bengaluru, which is built across 40,000 sq ft with a helipad, he said the details of its construction, funding and “its relation with shell companies” have to be found out.
