Last Updated 23 March 2017, 19:09 IST

Militants on Thursday attacked a police vehicle escorting the car of a PDP legislator in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. Reports said militants opened fire on the cavalcade when MLA Mohammad Yousuf was on the way to his hometown from Anantnag around 9.30 am.

The exchange of fire took place between the security personnel and the militants for some time near an orchard in Kondlan village, 60 km from here, but there was no report of any casualty.
The police vehicle and the MLA’s bulletproof car suffered some damage in the shootout, reports said.

Over the past two years, there has been a rise in the number of local youth taking up arms in the south Kashmir districts of Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam and Anantnag. Encounters between militants and the armed forces are frequent, and the locals do not shy away from expressing support to the terrorists.
