Govt planning to hike quota ceiling to 72%

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said his government was exploring the possibility of increasing the reservation ceiling in education and employment to 72 %.

Speaking after being felicitated by various Dalit organisations, he said the government had been holding consultations with legal experts on introducing population-based reservation in state. Tamil Nadu government has provided 69% reservation by implementing the system. The government has been making efforts to increase reservation ceiling to 72%, he added.

He said his government had already started allocating funds in the annual budget based on population. A separate legislation has been enacted making it mandatory to allocate funds as per the population of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The budgetary allocation has gone up considerably ever since the law came into effect, he added.

The state has allocated about Rs 27,000 crore for the development of SCs and STs in the 2017-18 state budget, while the Centre has set aside only Rs 39,000 crore for this purpose, he said, advising the Centre to follow in the foot steps of his government.

Siddaramaiah was showered with flowers as soon as he entered the venue, the Palace Grounds.

A headgear and a sword were gifted to him during the felicitation, however, he returned them immediately. The organisers had made a special seat for him that resembled a throne. But Siddaramaiah refused to sit on it and ensured that it was removed.
