The 10th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will kickstart soon and Bengaluru will host its first match on April 8. Bengalureans are waiting with bated breath to watch Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) star batsman Chris Gayle in action.

Looking fitter than ever before, Chris, who is in the city for an event organised by United Spirits – Diageo’s DRINKiQ, took time off to chat with Nina C George about the IPL and becoming a father.

Are you excited to be back for another season of the IPL?

Yes, I am super excited to be back. It’s been six years since I’ve been a part of RCB. It’s a privilege to be associated with such a wonderful group where the players are looked after well and respected for who they are.

What is your mood like just before a match?

There’s a lot of thought and analysis that goes on inside my head before a match. It’s not just my love for cricket but also entertaining my
fans.

What is the best thing about the IPL?

The IPL brings together players from across the globe. Every player is different and has his  own tastes and preferences. Sometimes we stay in our respective rooms and like our privacy but there are times when we come together and have a good time.

You are known for your antics on the field...
I am at my best on the field  when I am happy. Nothing is pre-planned; I express my joy and do whatever comes to my mind at that time. I think it’s best to come up with random things to entertain people.

What do you do when you are not playing?
I am a lone ranger sometimes. It may sound funny but when I am not playing, I am sleeping. Two months of the IPL is quite draining, mentally and physically.  I believe that there’s no better therapy than getting some sound sleep.

What’s your fitness secret?
Cricketers cannot afford to compromise on their health and fitness. I make sure I eat right and exercise well.

How does it feel to be a father?

I am a really proud dad. And yes, I’ve done the nappy changes a few times and I am good at it. Spending time with my little girl frees my mind.

Your thoughts on Bengaluru....

There’s a lot of positive energy here. I enjoy playing at M Chinnaswamy Stadium because the atmosphere is electrifying, thanks to enthusiastic cricket lovers.
