When habitual offenders clean up village

Bengaluru Rural police roped in habitual offenders and rowdy elements into community service. The offenders engaged in cleaning up garbage after the Madduramma Jathramahotsava - a mega event that was recently held at Huskur village in Anekal taluk.

As many as 100 people with criminal background ranging from petty crimes to history sheeters from at least eight police stations in and around Huskur village participated in the ‘swatchatha’ drive with enthusiasm.

An equal number of police and public also took part in the drive. “We counselled them on the importance of partaking in community services and everyone obliged,” said S K Umesh, DySP Anekal Sub-division.

“We chose to clean up Huskur village as the mahotsava that takes palce for four continuous days attracts lakhs of people, even from the neighbouring state as well. After the festivities are over, the entire village will be littered with plastic cups and plates that sometimes remain till the next year’s event. Hence, we took it up on ourselves and decided to clean, the officer said.
