After topping best varsities list in state, JSS targets national ranking

University scores high on teaching excellence, research

Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara (JSS) University of the JSS Mutt’s JSS Mahavidyapeetha has topped the list of Karnataka’s young universities, below 10 years.

The university authorities said, taking into consideration the scores of the universities in established universities (above 10 years) and new universities (under 5 years) University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, (score 779), and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (score 737) respectively takes top two slots and JSS University stands third with a score of 711 out of 1,000.

Addressing media persons here on Saturday, vice chancellor of JSS University, Dr B Suresh said, “The top ranking has been obtained in a survey conducted by the Karnataka State University Rating Framework (KSURF) and the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC), based on quality of education, research and infrastructure, and now the institution aims to top a similar list in the national level.

“The ranks were released by Higher Education Minster Basavaraj Rayareddi on Friday in Bengaluru. The KSHEC of the Higher Education Department has released the inaugural edition of the KSURF, a comprehensive assessment of all state, private and deemed universities. The report has been compiled by ICARE Ratings, the research and analysis division of the Indian Centre for Academic Rankings and Excellence, on behalf of the state government. Out of 52 universities in the state, 42 were evaluated as part of the survey, while ranks were allotted to 38 varsities,” Dr Suresh said.

“The universities were divided into four categories, based on their year of inception and type — new university (0-5 years), young university (5-10 years), established university (10+ years) and specialist university (specialises in one core discipline such as Music, Agriculture, Horticulture, Folklore, and Kannada Language). JSS University scored high on teaching excellence, inclusiveness, research and infrastructure. It was a bit low only in innovation. It envisages to emerge as the ‘most respected university’ in Karnataka, nationally and globally, and will continue to provide quality education that can help transform individuals and the society,” said executive secretary of the JSS Mahavidyapeetha C G Betsurmath.

He said, “JSS university has chalked out a Vision 2015 document to become a global institution, by growing five folds. It has planned a smart campus for over 20,000 students on 102 acres of land at Varuna in Mysuru taluk. The foundation stone for the smart campus will be laid on April 29 at an estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crore,” he said.

He said, an international standard sports complex, including a cricket stadium, would be established at an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore.
