Great fusion (2000-09)
Various Artistes
EMI, Rs 295

Embracing diverse sounds
East West fusion has been in existence for some four decades now. However, during the decade 2000-2009 there have been some unusual experiments. Great Fusion (2000-2009) is a compilation of 12 tracks selected from fusion albums over the last decade.

The album begins with ‘The Other Rhythm’ by Taufiq Qureshi from the album Rhydhun. This is followed by ‘Tandav’, a composition by percussionist Bickram Ghosh from his album Rhythmscape. ‘Together’ is a composition by santoor artiste Rahul Sharma and French pianist Richard Clayderman from thier album, Confluence. The composition blends the flow of Clayderman’s classical-influenced piano with spirited organic percussion, orchestral elements, and the shimmering magic of Sharma’s instrument. There’s also a touch of native American flute. ‘Gibberish’ is another track by Rahul Sharma from Zen.

‘Priority’ by sitarist Niladri Kumar from the album of the same name is a song which begins with melodic slow scale over fast tempo rhythm played with electronic beat and tabla, and as the song progresses Niladri does his best, insanely shredding on his Zitar, modified sitar. ‘Beloved’ by Anoushka Shankar from her album Rise has the format of a filmy song to evoke the breezy evening feel. The main melody itself gives the much necessary mood. But the song as a whole has a soothing and healing effect. Adding to the mellifluous effect is the sound of Bansuri, put to use all through the track. Guitar comes as a surprise instrument in this song. ‘Miliha’ by Advaita from the album Grounded in Space is an elaborate track, which begins with Hindustani vocals and keys, and before you know it, breaks into an addictive Saarangi tune.

Other tracks include ‘Arani’ (from Urban grooves project: Rajasthan), ‘Daybreak’ by Nitin Sawhney (London Underground), ‘Secret Channel’ by Tabla Beat Science (Tabla Matrix), ‘Nine Horses’ by Trilok Gurtu (Broken Rhythms) and ‘Exorcism’ by Karnatriix (Namaste).
