Prayers mark Ramanavami celebrations; music fest begins

The 79th national music festival, an annual event by the Ramaseva Mandali as part of Ramanavami celebrations, was inaugurated by Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, scion of the Mysuru royal family, at the Fort High School grounds on Wednesday.

The festival that is scheduled to take place from April 5 to May 5 will see performances by stalwarts of classical music.

Day One saw a Nadaswara performance by Lakshman, B S Ramesh Babu and party in the evening. This was followed by a Carnatic vocal concert by Bombay Jayashree and troupe, much to the delight of the audience.

Speaking after inaugurating the festival, Wadiyar said, “It is great to see that the festival is being organised in Chamarajpet year on year. It gives me great privilege to open an event where my grandfather did the honours.”

At Iskcon

Across the city, Ramanavami was celebrated with great fervour. It is one of the important festivals at Iskcon, Bengaluru. The deities, Krishna and Balarama, were decorated as Rama and Lakshmana. This decoration happens only once a year. The cowherd boys of Vrindavana accept royal robes and appear as the princes of Ayodhya, holding bows and arrows in their hands.

In the evening, the utsava deities of Radha and Krishnachandra were decorated as Sita and Rama and taken out in a procession around the temple. After the procession, devotees performed Rama Taraka Homa by chanting Rama Ashtottara Shatha Nama.
