Move over yoga, music: children in city are learning mime, Lego this summer

Yoga, music and dance activities during the summer holidays are passe. Parents now prefer to enrol their wards for mime, lego building, film-making and similar out-of-the-box programmes, say workshop organisers in the city.

At Jus’ Trufs – Chocolate Shop and Cafe, the stage is set for children to take part in the ‘Kids Mime’ workshop. Mime that involves miming or acting out a story through body motions without the use of speech is one of the most sought-after summer programmes.

“The emphasis today is more on helping a child improve their personality and express themselves freely. Mime workshops tap the innate potential of a person and make them creative. Our workshop is set to begin on April 8 and seats are fast filling up. The demand has gone up in the last few years,” said cafe in-charge, Shabana R K.

If mimes do not sound interesting, there is ‘Robotics with Lego WeDo – Summer Camp’ organised by Bloom and Grow.

The workshop encourages children to build models out of building blocks in various designs and shapes, and makes it interactive using a Lego WeDo construction kit, a simple robotics tool.

“Lego is popular abroad and is also catching up in India. We have received a large number of registrations for the workshop. This time we are holding the workshop for children aged seven years and above,” said Carol Pinto from Bloom and Grow.

Rajani Rao, a resident of Indiranagar, has enrolled her nine-year-old child for a mime workshop.

“It’s not just a fun activity but also helps children overcome stage fear and improve communication skills which is important in today’s competitive world,” she said.

Theatre, baking, arts and crafts and storytelling are other popular summer activities.
