Heated arguments were witnessed between Minister for Sericulture and Animal Husbandry A Manju and a few farmers at a programme at Naguvanahalli in the, Mandya district, on Friday.

Manju, who visited the taluk to launch the vaccination drive for cattle against Foot-and-Mouth disease, was taken aback when a few farmers started demanding farm loan waiver. Irked by the farmers demand, Manju told the farmers that it was a vaccination drive programme and that they should not create a scene by discussing unrelated issues.

The farmers retaliated, saying that they have not come to keep quiet, and demanded measures to curb farmers’ suicide in the district. They alleged that the state government has not taken any step to mitigate agrarian crisis while it is spending crores for particular castes, tribes and communities. “Why are you neglecting farmers,” they questioned. However, MLA Ramesh Bandisiddegowda intervened and pacified the farmers.

Chandagalu Milk Producers’ Association director K Shivanna explained that the government is yet to disburse incentives to milk producers. With a hike in fodder prices, dairy farmers are facing problems, he said.

660 vets to be appointed

Manju assured to take measures to release the incentive at the earliest. He said that 660 veterinarians would be appointed by July-end. As appointment through KPSC would take a lot of time, veterinary doctors will be appointed on merit basis without any interview. This will be the first-of-its-kind exercise in the country, he said.
