The sound of music

The sound of music

It almost felt like everything fell into place for Joe Panicker and Naquash V when they decided to make music their life. College buddies in Kerala, they shared music with each other and soon discovered their interest but graduating took them to different locations and when they finally met in Bengaluru, they decided to make their passion official. This led to the inception of ‘Aerate Sound’.

Literally making sounds in the electronica scene, the audio-visual performers soon started making their presence in the music scene of the city.

They debuted their work during the ‘Boiler Room’ event held last week. Anila Kurian spoke to Joe Panicker to understand more about their work and interests.

Tell us about ‘Boiler Room’ and your experience there.
‘Boiler Room’ is basically an underground music collective where DJ sets are streamed and uploaded online for people across the globe to enjoy. We were quite surprised that ‘Aerate Sound’ was called to perform along with other interesting artistes from the country. I guess we were doing something good all along to be noticed.

How did you and Naquash form the group?
We were college mates and shared an interest in music and art. We spoke, read and even shared creative works with each other, but we had to part ways after college. A few years later, we both came to Bengaluru on individual work and decided to make this official. We recently released our first album called ‘Only for External’.

Describe your music...
It’s an expression, an attempt to put down the sound in my head. There’s always something interesting ringing in my head and we use softwares to produce that sound. It might not come out exactly as expected but if we get it close to what we imagined it to be, that is our music.

Who or what inspires your music?
My parents are music enthusiasts. They exposed me to various genres at a young age and I studied music as well. I am also heavily influenced by ‘Chenda Melam’, African, folk and rock music. In short, everything under the sun.

Why should someone listen to your work?
To be honest, we are still figuring out our sound and why we are unique. But we know that music is what we want to do and we are working very hard to make it interesting.

We never marketed ourselves; whenever we performed in the city, we only played for those who came. We have been appreciated for making music and just hope to continue doing so.

Any upcoming projects?
We are overwhelmed with the response for ‘Only for External’ which is a nine-track album. We are working on a series of EPs and will be collaborating with Bengaluru-based rapper ‘Smokey The Ghost’ for our upcoming project. Apart from this, we also have a few independent projects that we are working on.
