Madikeri TP resolves to oppose Kasturirangan report

The taluk panchayat on Thursday passed a resolution at a special meeting opposing the implementation of Kasturirangan report in Kodagu district.

At the meeting chaired by taluk panchayat president Tekkade Shobha, the members passed a unanimous decision to oppose the report.

Speaking during the meeting, member Nagesh said the implementation of the report will be detrimental to the people of the district, especially to the farming community. The government should consider the feelings of the public. Many gram panchayats of the district too have opposed the implementation of the Kasturirangan report, he said.

The taluk panchayat president said that several gram panchayats in the district are located amidst forest areas. Therefore, the villages which come under the ecologically-sensitive zone (ESZ) have already opposed the report. The villages are in need of road, water and other basic infrastructure.

But if the Kasturirangan report is implemented, the people in such villages will be deprived of the basic amenities, the president added. The president expressed her discomfiture on the government turning down the taluk panchayat’s recommendation to exclude the residential areas from ESZ.

Member Kodapalu Ganapathy said the move of selecting the villages without enlightening the people on the report is wrong. Taluk panchayat vice president Boliyadira Subramani and executive officer Jeevan Kumar were present during the meeting.
