Dalit leaders cry foul over Ambedkar Bhavan

Some people, backed by vested interests, have been deliberately posing hurdles for the construction of Ambedkar Bhavan, Dalit leaders have charged.

Addressing reporters here, Dalit leader A Chandrakumar said 1.61 acre land bearing survey number 178/1 at Derelail village has been earmarked for Ambedkar Bhavan.

Earlier, the land was used as a playground and there was no permanent structure for religious worship. The land has been handed over to the Social Welfare Department, according an order passed by the immediate past deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, towards Ambedkar Bhavan.

Recently, some contractors have built a structure resembling a temple and have claimed the structure is a place of worship. A committee called Seva Samiti, comprising the people who have erected the structure, has appealed in the court saying that permission should be given to conduct Kola ritual in the land.

The injunction order has been vacated by the court. But the structure has not removed by the other party even though the tahsildar has ordered to clear the structure. A mispropaganda that the structure is a Daivasthana and many devotees visit the place, is being carried out by the Samiti, Chandrakumar charged.

He sought the removal of the unauthorised structure. The DC has visited the spot, he said. Dalit Sangharsh Samiti District coordinator Nirmal Kumar, convener Ramesh Kotian and SC and ST Federation District Committee member Ashok Kumar were present.
