Girls in govt high schools to get new uniforms next month

Last Updated 15 April 2017, 19:51 IST

As many as 8.5 lakh girls studying in government high schools will wear brown churidar pyjamas and light green kameez with red checks on them from the coming academic year.

The new uniforms — announced in the state budget for 2017-18 in March — have been despatched to all Block Education Offices which would distribute them to high schools in the first or second week of May. It is the first change in uniform for high school girl students in 10 years.

Till the outgoing academic year, girls of classes 8, 9 and 10 were wearing dark blue skirts and light blue shirts. While the girls’ uniform has become colourful, boys would continue wearing navy blue trousers and light blue shirts.

Under the Vidya Vikas scheme, the government distributes free uniforms to pupils studying in state-run schools from class 1 to 8. This year, tenders were called early to ensure the uniforms arrived on time. Previously, the dress materials for uniforms were procured from the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation.
