Last Updated 16 April 2017, 19:20 IST

More than 2,000 Bengalureans took part in the 5k ‘Millet Marathon’ organised by the Agriculture department here on Sunday.

The event was organised to create awareness about organic foods and millets, ahead of the National Organics and Millets Fair 2017 to be held in the city from April 28.

Minister for Agriculture, Krishna Byre Gowda, who flagged off the run, said that compared to paddy, millets require 70% less water. “Millet cultivation is most apt at a time when the state is reeling under drought. They do not require pesticides and are low-cost crops,” the minister said.

The 3-day national fair beginning April 28 will be held at Tripura Vasini Palace Grounds. Besides showcasing organic products, millets and delicacies made out of millet crops, the event will provide an opportunity for farmers, buyers, sellers and exporters.
