The top leadership of the CPIM will meet in New Delhi from Monday to discuss the political situation following the recent Assembly elections.

The three-day meet will also see deliberations on forging Opposition unity to fight the ruling BJP.

The 16-member Polit Bureau will meet on Monday, while the 101-member Central Committee, including special and permanent invitees, will deliberate on the political situation for two days from Tuesday.

The meeting comes against a backdrop of BJP’s victory in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand and its formation of governments in Manipur and Goa, despite not being the single largest party in those states.

Sources said the Left leaders would have a threadbare discussion on the BJP’s electoral gains and what should be done on the political front to counter the saffron party’s ascendancy.

The party had said that the BJP accomplished victory by a “mix of rank, communal appeal and by putting together a wide-ranging caste coalition”.
