UAE-based bizman to invest Rs 1,000 cr in Mahabharata

UAE-based billionaire businessman B R Shetty is set to invest Rs 1,000 crore in Mahabharata, a film based on Malayalam writer M T Vasudevan Nair’s novel Randamoozham.

This is being seen as a significant move toward taking Indian cinema to the global
audience.

India’s biggest-ever motion picture will be directed by advertising filmmaker V A Shrikumar Menon and will be produced in two parts.

The shoot for the first part is scheduled to commence in September 2018 and will be released in early 2020. The second part of the film will hit the screens within 90 days after the release of part one.

“The film will be primarily shot in English, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu, and will be dubbed into other Indian languages and leading foreign languages,” a statement from Shetty said on Monday.

“I believe that this film will not only set global benchmarks, but also reposition India and its prowess in mythological storytelling,” he said.

Randamoozham (Second Turn) narrates the Mahabharata from Bheema’s perspective. It’s one of MT’s most celebrated works and since the late 1990s, has been in the news over possibilities of a film version. MT, who won the Jnanpith award, has also penned the film’s screenplay.

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has repeatedly figured in reports as being zeroed in on to play Bheema.

On Monday, the actor posted a video on his official Facebook page, thanking Shetty for investing in the project. “I consider myself fortunate that my name has always been associated with the project. I thank MT sir for the faith he has shown in me,” Mohanlal said.

The statement doesn’t give details of the cast and crew, but bills the film as a collaboration of the best of Indian and global technicians, including Academy Award winners.

Menon has been researching for the project for the past few years.
