City's century-old organisation brings alive the classic Sound of Music in Konka
Julie Andrews as Maria from the 1965 musical ‘Sound of Music’ singing to the von Trapp children about raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, has been a constant in the childhood of many generations.

What if Maria was actually from India and she sang about raw mangoes and Indian summers, in Konkani?

The Canara Union Art Section has adapted ‘Sound of Music’ into Konkani and will be presenting their two-hour musical drama titled ‘Naad Ninaad’ on April 21, at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Malleswaram.

The century-old organisation tries to keep members of the Chitrapur Saraswat community connected through art and culture, but their theatre scene is not so active, said co-director of the play, Shashank Sanade. “I always wanted to work with children and Sound of Music is ever popular, having universal appeal, so we thought it would be a hit if we adapted it,” Sanade said. He is directing the play along with Anand Nagarkar.

Captain von Trapp is Colonel and instead of Austria, he and his seven children are living on the hills of Shimla. The characters speak and sing the original tunes live, with Konkani lyrics. Uday Bhatkal worked day and night to complete the translation in five days. “We were eager to start work on the play as soon as possible. I have kept the language very simple since most of the characters are children,” Uday said. He has translated the musical to Kannada as well, and says they may consider staging it some day.

After translation, they had auditions and the rehearsals lasted for three months. “There were many eager children who came for the try-out. We did not want to disappoint them by rejecting them, so we have two sets of children who perform in alternate shows,” Sanade said. The cast and crew is 70-member strong and their ages range from 4 to 70, he said.

The musical has been staged before but only in their community centre and with the performance on April 21, the creators want more people to get a chance to watch it. Meanwhile, they are already getting invited to stage their play in Mumbai and Hyderabad.
