Basic facilities sought for railway colony

The residents of Railway Colony in Pandeshwar are living in a pathetic condition without access to clean drinking water, lack of security and good quarters.

The Southern Railway should take necessary measures to basic amenities to the residents, Dakshin Railway Employees Union and CITU general secretary Mathew Syriac said.

He was at a hunger strike launched in front of Mangaluru Central Railway Station on Thursday.

Syriac said there is no proper drinking water facility for the residents. The water from the city corporation source is supplied trough railway department. But, the quantity is not sufficient and there are leakages in the pipeline. At many places, the sewage gets into the water pipeline. When the water is subjected to lab tests, it was found unfit for usage. Also, there is no proper underground system and the sewage passes through open drains, he claimed.

Most of the buildings are old and are in need of repair. There are around 300 families in the Railway Colony, he said.

Referring to an incident of assault on a woman at the colony, he said the residents of the colony are living in an unsafe condition. The victim, who was assaulted and admitted to the hospital, is still unconscious. A complaint was also registered in Pandeshwar Police Station in this regard, he said.

Around 100 beggars have been dwelling in the condemned quarters building at night. These unauthorised occupants also indulge in anti-social activities, which has caused nuisance to the residents, he said.

There are issues related to welfare measures, TA, bill clearances and also salary due to shortage of PB clerk at the MAQ PW section.

There is only clerk and he has to work for three days in Kasargod and three days in Mangaluru. The post is lying vacant from six months, he said.

Syriac said that the Railway Department is outsourcing the jobs of AC Couch Attendants (ACCA) and the tender process is in progress. The work should not be given to private hands, he urged.
