Truckers' stir from April 5

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, AIMTC president G R Shanmugappa said the indefinite stir has been called to draw the attention of the Union government to the delay in implementing the new national permit scheme.

The Union government had entered into an agreement with AIMTC on April 8, 2009 to implement the scheme on or before January 1, 2010. It was agreed that national permit would be granted to a vehicle on payment of a fee of Rs 15,000 per annum. However, the scheme is yet to be notified.  “We urge the government to notify the scheme before March 31 or face stoppage of goods movement across the country,” Shanmugappa said.

Other demands of the national body of truckers are: containing corruption and crimes on highways, doing away with multiple taxation, single category toll for truck operators and reduction in diesel prices in Karnataka.
