Burglars decamp with Rs 15L from Syndicate Bank

The burglars have escaped with a bag containing Rs 15 lakh cash from the Syndicate Bank, main office at Ashok Nagar here recently.

According to sources, Manjunath, assistant manager of the bank’s Shivalli branch, had visited the main office in the city on Monday, to get Rs 15 lakh. Cashier Vidya had handed over Rs 15 lakh to Manjunath in the denomination of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 currency notes.

Manjunath had sought Rs 50 and Rs 100 currency notes in place of higher denomination notes, when cashier Vidya is said to have told Manjunath to speak to the manager in this regard. Manjunath allegedly left the bag near the counter and went to meet the manager. When he returned, the bag was missing.

As soon as the news of the missing bag spread, the situation turned tense, and the officials immediately ordered closure of the bank door and informed the jurisdictional East Police Station. CPI Santhosh Kumar visited the spot and conducted a mahazar.

The customers inside the bank were enquired and were let off after collecting their address, phone numbers and necessary information.

The police also enquired bank employees. Sniffer dog squad was pressed into service.

As the bank’s office in the basement was being renovated, it had been temporarily shifted to the first floor. Hence, CCTV cameras had not been installed. The miscreants, who were aware that there were no cameras might have committed the crime, suspect the police.
