Guppy fish to be let into 11,000 open wells: Mayor

Mayor Kavitha Sanil said that guppy fishes will be released into all the 11,000 open wells in the city in May, to check the breeding of mosquitoes.

She was speaking at the World Malaria Day programme organised by the district administration, ZP, MCC and Department of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday.

“The MCC has collected and uploaded in a software information on open wells. The Malaria Control Software – a technology-based initiative that helped in tracking and control of malaria – has been well appreciated by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, which is now planning to launch the software in other districts. Right from detection of malaria cases, the system used in monitoring treatment and the action taken to destroy source where the malaria-carrying mosquitoes breed, and helps in checking the malaria in the long run,” said Sanil.

To check the blood smear of construction workers, “Good Morning Team” has been constituted to meet workers in the morning and check their blood smear to test for malaria, said the mayor.

She called upon the owners of all commercial buildings to clean the overhead tanks within 15 to 20 days, to check the breeding of mosquitoes.

MLA J R Lobo said that the public should join hands with civic authorities to check the outbreak of malaria. The public should ensure that water is not stagnant in their surroundings as mosquitoes breed on fresh water too. Citizens should link their sewer lines to UGD lines in the city. The letting of sewer lines to open drains result in breeding of filaria-carrying mosquitoes.

Stating that neem is a repellent to mosquitoes, Lobo said that neem plants should be planted in our surroundings.

Decline in Malaria
Malaria cases in the city limits seem to be showing a marginal decline compared to last year. In 2016, from January to April, 2,065 malaria cases were reported in the city. This year, 1,271 cases have been reported in the period. In 2016, a total of 11037 malaria cases have been reported.
