An unidentified man on Monday night duped a city-based jeweller of one kg gold by giving him a bag containing Rs 33 lakh that had only colour xerox photocopies of Rs 2,000 notes.

The victim Dinesh Kumar told the police that a stranger contacted him over phone and introduced himself as his brother's friend and a resident of Tamil Nadu. He told Kumar that he was looking forward to buy gold in bulk as Akshaya Tritiya was nearing and, struck a deal for one kg of gold for Rs 33 lakh.

On Monday, the man called Kumar and told him that they would meet at a different place and not at his jewellery shop on Nagarathpet Road and, Kumar agreed. At around 11 pm, the man arrived on a two-wheeler with a bag and met Kumar near the Shikshkara Sadana on Kempegowda Road, towards Mysore Bank Circle. Both exchanged bags, checked the contents, spoke for a brief while and left the place.

When Kumar returned to his shop and checked the bag, he found that all the Rs 2,000 notes were colour photocopies. He then approached the jurisdictional Halasuru Gate police station and registered a complaint.
